What is SIP?

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an IP-based protocol which allows communication endpoints to "talk" with each other. Signaling known from traditional telephony is now done using the internet protocol TCP/IP. Functionality of SIP is closely related to the well-known HTTP protocol.

Take into account that SIP handles the signaling part of a communication only (Connect, Disconnect, Ringing, Codec negotiation,...)

The actual transfer of data packets (eg voice or video) is done using the RTP protocol (Real-Time Transport Protocol). RTP handles the continuous transmission of audiovisual data in SIP-based VoIP and video telephony.
